With funds raised through community events like the Cancer Gala, the American Cancer Society offers free programs and services for patients and their families, including:
I CAN COPE provides education for people facing cancer either personally or as a friend or family caregiver.
LOOK GOOD…FEEL BETTER offers women undergoing cancer treatment the opportunity to learn techniques to improve the image-related side effects of treatment.
MAN TO MAN helps men and their families cope with prostate cancer by providing patient, education, support, and awareness of prostate cancer as a major health concern for all men.
ROAD TO RECOVERY volunteers assist cancer patients by providing transportation to and from treatment facilities.
REACH TO RECOVERY volunteer breast cancer survivors provide peer support to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
WIGS, SCARVES, AND TURBANS made available free of charge for cancer survivors who request them.
DIETITIAN ON CALL provides a registered dietitian with free telephone nutrition counseling to anyone touched by cancer. Information is personalized, questions are answered, written materials are sent, and follow up is provided.
ONCOLOGY SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM provides licensed clinical social workers to assist patients and families with more complex cancer related issues such as loss of income, lack of health insurance, locating community resources, and assisting with the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis.
PRIORITY POPULATION GRANTS awarded to community partners to provide education and increase screening rates for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer for priority racial ethnic groups.
The American Cancer Society answers questions about cancer, treatment options, programs, and services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patients, families, and friends can get information immediately by calling 1.800.ACS.2345 or visiting www.cancer.org.
In the Greater Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas, the American Cancer Society funds cancer research to help determine preventive measures, to establish early detection screenings, and to develop treatments. As of January 2010, the Society is supporting 48 research grants totaling more than $26.8 million at area institutions, including Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, Mercy Medical Center and Georgetown University.
The American Cancer Society also offers Hope Lodge, a free temporary housing facility for cancer patients seeking treatment in Baltimore. The Society also partners with local hospitals, including Greater Baltimore Medical Center, George Washington University, St. Agnes Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, Meritus Health and the University of Maryland, to offer patient navigators who help guide cancer patients and their families through the journey from diagnosis to treatment, recovery, and survivorship.
